US President Donald Trump says he plans to spend 32 days travelling across the country to campaign for Republican candidates ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.
Trump said on Tuesday that he would visit several states, including Texas and Ohio, where closely contested races are taking place. The elections will determine which party controls the US House of Representatives and Senate for the next two years.
Trump dismissed reports that some Republican candidates were attempting to distance themselves from his administration, saying they had all asked him to campaign for them.
The president’s decision to play a central role in the midterm campaign comes as recent polls indicate declining approval among voters. A Wall Street Journal poll released last week put Trump’s approval rating at 37 percent, its lowest level in the publication’s presidential polling ahead of a midterm election since 1990.
The poll comes amid voter concerns over the rising cost of living and the economic effects of the war involving Iran, which has contributed to volatility in global energy markets.
Trump has nevertheless presented himself as a key figure in the Republican Party’s efforts to retain control of Congress. His allies have said he will campaign aggressively, similar to his 2024 presidential campaign, with the aim of mobilising voters who traditionally participate less frequently.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has faced criticism over the Department of Homeland Security’s use of $20 million for advertisements highlighting the president’s achievements. Democratic and Republican lawmakers have questioned whether the spending amounts to an improper use of taxpayer money for political messaging.
Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat, accused the department of misusing government funds and called for scrutiny of the advertisements.
