Trump Backs US Diesel Export Ban Amid Rising Fuel Prices

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for a possible ban on diesel exports from the United States as fuel prices continue to rise amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump said he had previously supported the idea of restricting diesel exports.

“I’ve called for that too. I’ve said let’s not send out the diesel,” Trump said.

Trump added that the United States produces a large amount of diesel and that restricting exports could have some impact on domestic gasoline supplies and prices.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was also present at the meeting in New York, said the administration was examining whether a full or partial export ban would be feasible, taking into account the country’s overall refining capacity.

Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune also said last week that he was open to a diesel export ban if it could help ease pressure on fuel prices.

Fuel prices have risen sharply since the outbreak of the US-Iran war in late February, putting additional economic pressure on American consumers and creating political challenges for Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections.
