President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians on October 1 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government has announced that the celebration will be held on a low-key basis, according to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The announcement followed the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee in Abuja to coordinate the anniversary activities. The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Akume said the anniversary would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and heroines who fought for independence from colonial rule.
He added that the occasion would also allow the government to highlight its achievements and ongoing reforms while acknowledging the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
The programme will begin with a World Press Conference on September 24, followed by a Juma’at Service on September 25 and a Church Service on September 27.
An Independence Day Public Lecture is scheduled for September 30, while President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast will take place on October 1.
Several ministers and senior government officials are members of the organising committee, including the ministers responsible for Finance, Information, Interior, Foreign Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory, and Budget and Economic Planning, alongside the National Security Adviser and heads of security agencies.
The committee has been tasked with planning and coordinating the approved activities and ensuring proper documentation of the anniversary programme.
