Soludo Pardons Jailed Native Doctor, Appoints Him Youth Reformation Ambassador

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has granted a pardon to popular native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, and appointed him Ambassador for Youth Reformation in the state.

Soludo signed an order for Nwangwu’s immediate release on Friday after visiting him at the Nigeria Correctional Service facility in Amawbia.

Nwangwu was convicted in February and sentenced to 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges relating to the practice of “Okeite” and other related offences. The court also ordered the destruction of his shrine in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

He was among eight native doctors arrested in 2025 following the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law. Authorities accused him of promoting money rituals, quick-wealth practices and the use of human parts in rituals.

As part of the conditions attached to his sentence, Nwangwu agreed to renounce his fetish practices and support efforts aimed at reforming young people.

Following the governor’s pardon, Nwangwu has now been given a new role as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in Anambra State.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Youth Reformation, Dr Nelson Omenugha, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday.

Omenugha said the governor’s decision reflected an approach focused not only on punishment but also on correction, rehabilitation, restoration and giving individuals an opportunity to contribute positively to society.

The appointment is expected to form part of the state government’s broader efforts to promote youth reform and discourage practices associated with ritual crimes and the pursuit of quick wealth.
