Ruto Visits Dangote Refinery, Says Kenya Project Will Create 60,000 Jobs

Kenyan President William Ruto has toured the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos State, ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, scheduled for next week.

Ruto disclosed this in a post on his official X account on Friday, saying he visited the Nigerian refinery at the invitation of Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote.

He said the Dangote refinery, which has a crude oil refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, demonstrates what African governments, investors and financial institutions can achieve through collaboration.

According to Ruto, the Nigerian facility produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel daily.

He also highlighted the refinery’s infrastructure for transporting crude oil, including 120 kilometres of subsea pipelines connecting ships to the facility.

Ruto said the refinery planned for Lamu would be larger than the Nigerian facility and would transform Kenya’s petroleum sector by improving fuel reliability and security while supporting industrialisation.

He said the Kenyan project is expected to create about 60,000 jobs when operational.

The project is also expected to stimulate the growth of related industries, including fertiliser, chemical and packaging manufacturing.

The planned Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu is expected to have a refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, with its groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for September 30, 2026.
