One Dead as Powerful Storm Causes Flooding and Power Outages in Northeastern US

A powerful nor’easter has battered the northeastern United States, causing widespread flooding, power outages and travel disruptions across the region.

At least one person has died after being struck by a falling tree in Brooklyn, New York, as heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area.

According to FlightAware, about 425 flights were cancelled and 3,016 delayed as of Saturday night. Power outages affected nearly 73,000 homes and businesses, down from a peak of about 119,000 earlier in the day.

Several concerts and sporting events were also cancelled because of the severe weather, including scheduled performances by musician Ed Sheeran in Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service warned that the storm could continue bringing strong winds, high tides and heavy rainfall to the northeastern United States over the coming days.

Governors of New York and New Jersey had earlier declared states of emergency in areas expected to experience the worst conditions.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid beaches, flooded areas and dangerous waters because of the risk posed by flooding and unusually high tides.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned residents that entering or going near the water during the storm could be life-threatening.

Residents in coastal communities reported significant flooding, with water entering yards and streets. Despite the warnings, some people were seen kayaking through flooded streets in Long Island.

Meteorologists said nor’easters are common in New England during the autumn season, although this particular storm arrived somewhat earlier than usual for such a powerful system.
