Former American Idol contestant and Ohio pastor Caleb Flynn, 40, has been found guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn.
A jury convicted Flynn on Tuesday of murder and eight other charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence, after deliberating for less than three hours. He is facing life imprisonment without parole and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 5.
Prosecutors alleged that Flynn shot his 37-year-old wife twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping at their home in Tipp City, near Dayton, Ohio, on February 16.
The prosecution presented evidence including police body-camera footage, data from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch, and testimony from dozens of witnesses.
Among those who testified was Alleigha Botner, a former intern at Flynn’s church who said she had an 18-month affair with him. Prosecutors presented some of the roughly 100,000 text messages exchanged between them.
In one message sent in August 2025, Flynn allegedly wrote that he had stayed awake until 4am thinking about ways to kill his wife without going to prison. In another, he allegedly said he wanted her “dead and gone.”
Prosecutors argued that Flynn was concerned about losing custody of his daughters, as well as his positions at his wife’s family business and the church, if they divorced.
They also highlighted inconsistencies in his account of the night Ashley was killed. According to prosecutors, Flynn initially told police he was in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard gunshots and later discovered his wife dead. He also mentioned that a garage side door was open, but later told investigators he had not gone to the garage.
Flynn’s defence maintained that prosecutors had not produced concrete evidence proving he committed the murder. His lawyer, Patrick Mulligan, also argued that Flynn’s infidelity did not establish that he killed his wife.
The murder weapon has not been recovered. Investigators found the centre console of Flynn’s truck open, where he had reportedly kept a gun.
During the trial, prosecutors also played a song they said Flynn had created about his relationship with Botner. An Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations agent testified that several applications had been deleted from Flynn’s phone before Ashley’s death, including an AI music-generation application allegedly connected to his relationship with Botner.
Flynn previously appeared on American Idol in 2013, during the programme’s 12th season. He auditioned before Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson and received a “golden ticket” to Hollywood, although he did not reach the main competition.
Ashley Flynn was a schoolteacher and volleyball coach.
Caleb Flynn will be sentenced on October 5.
