Lecturers at three state-owned universities in Lagos State have commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the state government to implement a 40 per cent salary increase contained in the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) agreement.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).
The lecturers had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government, demanding the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement or face industrial action.
In a letter dated September 15, 2026, the unions said the salary increase, which was expected to take effect from January 1, 2026, had still not been implemented in the three institutions.
The lecturers said they had made several attempts to resolve the matter through meetings, correspondence and other channels, but claimed that their efforts had not produced the desired result.
They also noted that some other states, including Ogun, Abia, Osun, Ekiti and Enugu, had begun implementing the agreement in their state-owned universities.
The unions said the strike would continue until the Lagos State Government fully adopts and implements the agreement.
However, the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education said discussions with the unions had taken place and that the government was working towards obtaining final approval for the agreement.
The ministry's Permanent Secretary, Kasali Adeniran, said the government had reached a mutual understanding with the unions and that the process was awaiting final approval.
