Israeli Strike Kills Hamas Commander in Northern Gaza

Israeli forces have killed Izz al-Din al-Beik, the commander of Hamas’s armed wing in northern Gaza, in an airstrike on an apartment building in Gaza City, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.

The strike occurred early Tuesday in the Nassr neighbourhood of Gaza City. Hamas confirmed al-Beik’s death in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz also said in a joint statement that the Israeli military had targeted and killed al-Beik.

Al-Shifa Hospital said another person later died from injuries sustained in the attack.

Al-Beik had taken command of the Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza during the war, succeeding senior commander Ahmed al-Ghandour.

The attack comes amid intensified Israeli strikes against Hamas targets across Gaza in recent weeks. The Israeli military says it has killed at least 20 Hamas members this month, including senior commanders and individuals it alleges were involved in the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel or in holding Israeli captives.

Hamas has accused Israel of undermining the US-backed ceasefire agreement reached last October. The agreement provides for the eventual reconstruction of Gaza, but negotiations have made limited progress amid disagreements over Hamas’s disarmament and an Israeli military withdrawal.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli attacks have continued. Gaza health officials say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the agreement took effect, while the Israeli military says four Israeli soldiers have been killed during the same period.

Palestinian authorities say more than 73,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023.If you want, I can also provide 10 alternative English headlines for this report.
