Iranian-Americans Sue Trump, Demand End to US War on Iran

A group of Iranian Americans has filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, seeking a court order to halt US military action against Iran.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in a Washington, DC court by the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), an advocacy organisation representing Iranian Americans.

The plaintiffs say the ongoing war has harmed them and their families in Iran, including through deaths and injuries caused by air strikes. They also cite economic hardship resulting from US sanctions, difficulties accessing healthcare and restrictions on travel.

According to the lawsuit, some relatives of the plaintiffs were killed or injured during US air strikes, including attacks on residential areas and while civilians were carrying out routine activities.

The group argues that the Trump administration is continuing the war without proper congressional authorisation or sufficient legal oversight, putting Iranian civilians and Iranian Americans at continued risk.

NIAC President Jamal Abdi said the lawsuit raises the question of whether a US president can independently keep the country involved in an indefinite war.

The lawsuit also cites claims that thousands of civilians, including hundreds of children, have been killed in the conflict. These figures are allegations contained in the complaint and have not been independently established by the court.

The legal action comes after a United Nations fact-finding mission said in September that the United States may have committed war crimes in Iran, including through air strikes that allegedly killed hundreds of civilians.

The US-Iran conflict has continued for more than six months since the fighting began on February 28, 2026. On September 22, Trump told world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly that he was considering whether to “annihilate” Iran if Tehran did not return to negotiations and reach an agreement to end the war.

The lawsuit now asks the US courts to intervene and halt the military campaign.
