Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has warned that it would target American warships across the Indian Ocean if the United States launches another war against Iran.
IRGC Navy Deputy for Political Affairs Ali Mohammadi made the statement on Saturday in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.
Mohammadi said that if another war breaks out, Iranian forces would attack US vessels and destroyers, including those operating in the Indian Ocean.
His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s rejection of a seven-day Iranian proposal concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has also claimed that the United States has “total control” over the strategic waterway, which is a major route for global oil shipments.
Mohammadi said the IRGC Navy is closely monitoring vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. He also questioned claims that oil tankers are freely passing through the Strait.
“If the United States claims to control the Strait of Hormuz, let it bring one of its warships into the area,” he said.
He also challenged Trump’s description of the waterway as “Trump Strait,” asking why US warships and vessels were not currently operating there if Washington had control of the area.
The IRGC official further said Iran’s armed forces were prepared to respond to any potential hostile action. He said the country had adopted new tactics, equipment and operational methods to strengthen its defence capabilities.
Mohammadi added that ongoing developments in West Asia could eventually lead to a reduction in the presence of foreign military powers in the region.
Iran restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of the US-Israeli military conflict with Iran on February 28. According to Press TV, subsequent tensions and US military actions led Tehran to declare the strategic waterway closed to traffic.
Mohammadi also said the United States had increasingly relied on aerial surveillance, following reported attacks on drones, military bases and radar systems in the region.
He warned that previous confrontations had demonstrated that countries engaging in hostilities against Iran would face significant costs.
