Iran has outlined seven conditions for resuming negotiations with the United States, including an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian assets and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official, told Al Jazeera that Tehran had communicated its demands to Washington through Qatari and Pakistani mediators.
Rezaei said Iran expects the United States to implement the conditions before any negotiations can take place.
“Our conditions include the release of our frozen assets, an end to the war on all fronts, non-interference in Iran’s internal affairs, an end to aggression against Iranian territory and the lifting of the naval blockade,” he said.
He also said Iran was reviewing its position on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, adding that any decision would depend on US actions.
Meanwhile, tensions have also escalated between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement.
The Saudi-led coalition said its air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh. The Houthis also claimed attacks against “sensitive sites” in Saudi Arabia and an Aramco facility in Yanbu.
Saudi authorities said they had also thwarted attempted attacks targeting Baish, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu.
Yemen’s internationally recognised government condemned the Houthi attacks, describing them as a violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and accusing Iran of continuing to provide military support to the group.
The developments come as concerns grow that the wider regional conflicts could escalate further. US President Donald Trump returned to the White House earlier than expected from a weekend stay at Camp David after the US State Department warned American citizens in the Middle East that hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis could escalate rapidly.
Rezaei, meanwhile, warned that Iran was prepared to respond to any further US military action, saying Tehran would target US military bases involved in attacks against Iran.
