Iran’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Ali Abdollahi, has praised President Masoud Pezeshkian’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as a strong expression of the Iranian people’s position before the international community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Abdollahi said Pezeshkian’s speech had conveyed what he called the “resounding voice” of the Iranian nation to the world.
He said the Iranian people had demonstrated their opposition to the United States through the president’s address, adding that Iran’s armed forces would continue responding to what they consider acts of aggression.
Abdollahi said Iran’s military would continue retaliatory operations until it had avenged the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and children in the southern Iranian city of Minab who, according to Iranian authorities, were killed during the early stages of the latest US-Israeli attacks.
“As long as Iran’s waters, soil and skies are threatened, no aggressor country and none of the aggressors’ supporters will have security,” Abdollahi said.
During his UN address, Pezeshkian said Iran could not be forced to surrender and maintained that the country was prepared to defend itself while remaining open to negotiations aimed at achieving peace.
He said Iran’s military capabilities were intended for defence and that Tehran would not seek permission from other countries to defend its territory.
The Iranian commander’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly and said he was facing a major decision over whether to reach an agreement with Iran or take further military action.
Trump also repeated his allegations that Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons, an accusation Tehran has rejected.
