The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the recent bye-elections held in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states will provide important operational lessons ahead of the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made this known on Saturday while overseeing the Commission’s operations at its National Situation Room at the headquarters in Abuja.
The Commission conducted four legislative bye-elections across the four states. They were held in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies of Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency of Delta State.
Amupitan described every off-cycle election as an important rehearsal for the general election, stressing that no electoral exercise should be considered insignificant or routine.
He said the elections would enable INEC to identify operational lessons as it develops its preparations and roadmap for the 2027 General Election.
According to him, the Commission would use the exercises to assess its logistics, test its technology and evaluate the readiness of its field operations.
The INEC chairman also said the Commission remained committed to electoral integrity and public confidence, adding that operational challenges identified before the elections were addressed promptly.
“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution,” Amupitan said.
He added that INEC would continue to refine its processes so that subsequent elections would meet higher standards of efficiency and transparency.
Amupitan, accompanied by National Commissioners and senior management officials, monitored reports from the affected states throughout the elections.
He also commended the officials and technical team in the National Situation Room for supporting the monitoring of the multi-state elections and assessing field performance.
