Gunmen Attack Plateau Mining Site, Kill Three Women

Three women were killed and another person injured when gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday.

The attackers reportedly stormed the mining site at about 4:30 p.m. and opened fire on workers before fleeing the area.

The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos.

He said three women were killed while another person sustained injuries in the attack.

A community member, John Silas, also confirmed that the incident occurred around 4 p.m., saying the attackers opened fire on people at the mining site.

The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of residents and workers in the area, with community members calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

The latest attack comes amid a resurgence of deadly violence in parts of Plateau State, particularly in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos Local Government Areas, despite a curfew imposed by the state government.

On Saturday, six people were reportedly killed in Laja village, Mangu, while some vigilantes were also killed at their duty post in Kikyo village during the curfew hours.

Other attacks have also been reported in Cantoma and Bin-Per villages in Mangu and Kasa village in the Marit District of Barkin Ladi.

The developments have prompted condemnation from the four branches of the Nigerian Bar Association in Plateau State.

As of Monday, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the mining site attack.

The spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, was reportedly unavailable for comment when contacted.
