Google has opened pre-orders for its new Googlebook premium laptops, designed for Android users and built around the company’s Gemini artificial intelligence tools.
The laptops start at $899, with initial models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. They will use Intel or Qualcomm processors and offer up to 14 hours of battery life, according to Google.
Googlebook laptops feature Gemini-powered tools that can help users draft and organise text, answer questions about information displayed on their screens and continue tasks started on an Android smartphone.
The devices combine Android technology with desktop features from ChromeOS, with Google aiming to make the transition between Android phones and computers more seamless.
The launch comes as Apple expands into the lower-priced laptop market with its $699 MacBook Neo, increasing competition in a sector traditionally dominated by affordable Chromebooks aimed at students and budget-conscious consumers.
Google’s latest laptop category also represents the company’s renewed push for premium ChromeOS devices following the Pixelbook, launched in 2017, and Pixelbook Go, introduced in 2019.
