Floods and Landslides Kill 19 in India and Nepal

Heavy rains and storms have triggered floods and landslides across parts of India and neighbouring Nepal, killing at least 19 people and leaving 10 workers missing, authorities said on Sunday.

In India’s Uttar Pradesh state, 15 people were killed and five others injured over the past 48 hours, while 117 houses were damaged. Heavy rainfall affected 63 districts, with the state recording rainfall 19 times above normal in the 24 hours to Saturday.

In Nepal, four people, including three children and a woman, died after a landslide buried their home while they were sleeping in Nishi Khola village in Baglung district.

Meanwhile, 10 Nepali workers remain missing after an avalanche buried the base camp of the 7,126-metre Himlung Himal in Manang district. The workers had been preparing tents for foreign climbers, who were not at the site when the avalanche struck.

Nepalese authorities have warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country's 77 districts, as water levels in major rivers and tributaries continue to rise.

In India, the Central Water Commission reported that 30 river-monitoring stations across seven states were in a severe situation. Several major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada, were above danger levels.

Flooding in Nepal also damaged part of a 40-megawatt hydropower project along the Rahuganga River, while floods and landslides disrupted telecommunications in some areas after damage to optical fibres and electricity supplies.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as heavy rainfall raises the risk of further flooding and landslides.
