Facebook, Instagram Restore Services After Brief US Outage

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram services have recovered after a brief outage affected thousands of users in the United States on Sunday, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.

The disruption began at around 8:55 p.m. Eastern Time. Downdetector recorded more than 17,000 reports of problems with Facebook and over 5,000 reports involving Instagram at the peak of the outage.

The number of reported disruptions dropped sharply by about 10 p.m. ET, suggesting that the two platforms had largely returned to normal.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the cause of the outage.

Downdetector noted that its figures are based on reports submitted by users and therefore may not represent the actual number of people affected.

Facebook and Instagram experienced a similar disruption in July, when Downdetector recorded thousands of reports of service problems.

The latest incident briefly affected access to two of Meta’s major social media platforms but services were subsequently restored.
