A car crashed into a gas store on Arab Road in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning, triggering an explosion that shook buildings several kilometres away.
The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m., according to witnesses.
Residents of Dantata Estate, located about two kilometres from the scene, said they felt the impact of the explosion, with some buildings reportedly vibrating.
“The explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep, and we could feel the buildings shaking. Everyone was wondering what had happened,” a resident said.
The explosion and resulting fire destroyed a shelter stand and signposts around Liberty Junction. Several nearby shops were also affected, while the vehicle involved in the crash was completely burnt.
The driver of the vehicle and a child were rescued from the scene and taken to a hospital for treatment.
When Daily Trust visited the area, security personnel and firefighters were at the scene working to restore normalcy.
A large crowd gathered around the area, causing significant disruption to vehicular movement.
