Ex-Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Converts to Islam

Former Super Eagles captain and Al-Ahli defender William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam.

The 33-year-old Nigerian international was said to have recited the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith, in Doha, Qatar, where he currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli.

Qatari newspaper Al-Arab reported the development on Wednesday, while respected Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook account showing Troost-Ekong reciting the Shahadah.

Troost-Ekong moved to the Gulf region in 2024 after joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej. He later moved to Qatar, signing a one-and-a-half-year contract with Al-Ahli in January 2026.

Since joining the Qatari club, he has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance in the current season.

At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria from 2015 to 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named Player of the Tournament.

Troost-Ekong also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games and became one of the country's most experienced defenders during his international career.
