The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence (AI) incidents, the White House announced following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, DC.
The agreement was reached during Xi’s three-day state visit, where the two leaders discussed AI, trade, Taiwan, and international conflicts, including the war in Iran. Beijing had not immediately commented on the White House announcement.
Trump said the summit strengthened his relationship with Xi and described the talks as productive, saying the two countries had made “tremendous strides” and achieved positive results for both sides.
Xi called on the US and China to pursue “healthy competition” in AI, saying the two leading AI powers have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage the technology for the benefit of humanity.
The summit also produced agreements on trade. The White House said China would import at least 10 million metric tonnes of US coal during 2027–2028, while both countries agreed to more favourable tariffs on $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods.
The two leaders are expected to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 summit in Miami in December.
Al Jazeera reported that although the summit featured significant ceremony, including a state banquet and military parade, continued dialogue between Washington and Beijing was one of the key outcomes of the meeting.
