Burkina Faso Unveils Locally Made Armoured Vehicles as It Pushes for Defence Self-Reliance

Burkina Faso has delivered the first batch of locally developed “Nanga” armoured vehicles to its defence and security forces, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to reduce dependence on foreign military equipment.

The project was led by Burkinabè engineer Thierry Alain Belemkoabga, together with a team of local engineers and technicians. Development of the vehicles reportedly lasted more than 24 months.

The Nanga vehicles were designed and adapted in Burkina Faso, with the vehicle bodies and several key components manufactured locally. The prototype also received an innovation award before undergoing testing and certification.

The vehicles can reportedly be configured for different missions, including troop transportation and medical evacuation.

The move is part of Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s broader push to strengthen domestic defence production. Shortly before the vehicle rollout, Burkina Faso inaugurated the TEXFORCES-BF industrial complex in Bobo-Dioulasso to produce military uniforms locally. The facility represents an investment of about 17 billion CFA francs.

Burkina Faso has also been strengthening its military relationship with Russia, alongside neighbouring Mali and Niger, as the three Sahel countries reduce security cooperation with traditional Western partners.

The locally produced armoured vehicles and military uniform factory are intended to strengthen Burkina Faso’s ability to supply its security forces using domestic industrial capacity.
