Afghanistan Says Three Killed in Pakistani Airstrikes

At least three people have been killed and four others injured in alleged Pakistani airstrikes in northeastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials said on Monday.

The attack reportedly took place at about 4am local time in Nurgal district of Kunar province. According to Afghan Taliban officials, a house was struck, killing three members of the same family.

Taliban deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said the attacks also targeted two locations in Barmal district of Paktika province, where a shop and an unoccupied house were destroyed. No casualties were reported there.

Pakistan has not immediately commented on the alleged airstrikes.

The incident comes amid renewed tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Relations between the two neighbouring countries have deteriorated over accusations by Islamabad that armed groups operating from Afghan territory are responsible for attacks inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government denies the allegations, maintaining that the violence is an internal Pakistani issue.

The latest strikes came days after a bombing at a mosque inside a police facility in Kohat, northwestern Pakistan, which killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more. Pakistani authorities blamed fighters based in Afghanistan for the attack.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information had warned that the country could target armed fighters inside Afghanistan in response to attacks originating from Afghan territory.
