Wike Orders Immediate Ban on Use of Abuja Green Areas as Car Lots

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate cessation of the use of parks, gardens and other designated green areas in Abuja as car dealership lots.

The directive was announced on Wednesday by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media.

According to the statement, the move is aimed at protecting Abuja’s green spaces, preserving recreational areas and helping to tackle flooding in the nation’s capital.

Wike expressed concern over the conversion of public recreational spaces, including portions of the Millennium Park, for commercial activities.

He directed relevant authorities to closely monitor all parks and green areas to ensure compliance with the order.

The FCT Administration has also established a task force to enforce the directive and prevent the unauthorised conversion of green areas for commercial purposes.

Meanwhile, Wike ordered an investigation into allegations that some civil servants approved the use of designated green areas as car dealership lots.

The affected officials, particularly directors overseeing Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs, have been summoned by Nancy Sabanti Nathan, Head of the FCT Civil Service.

The investigation is expected to determine how the affected areas were approved for use as car lots and establish responsibility for any violations.

The FCT Administration said the exercise is part of efforts to restore and protect Abuja’s green spaces while ensuring that public recreational areas are not diverted to unauthorised commercial activities.
