US Plans $1bn Security Aid Package for Colombia

The United States has announced plans to work with Congress to approve a $1 billion security assistance package for Colombia following the inauguration of the country’s new right-wing President, Abdelardo de la Espriella.

US State Department officials made the announcement late Friday, describing the proposed funding as part of a renewed partnership between Washington and Bogotá.

According to the State Department, the assistance is intended to support President de la Espriella’s administration in achieving shared security and strategic objectives.

The proposed package is expected to strengthen security cooperation between the two countries and provide support to Colombia as it tackles major security challenges, including organised crime and drug-related violence.

The United States said the assistance would be subject to congressional approval.
