US Missionary Kidnapped in Niger Released After Nine Months in Captivity

An American Christian missionary, Kevin Rideout, has been released into the care of U.S. officials after spending more than nine months in captivity in Niger.

Rideout’s organisation, SIM International, confirmed on Friday that he is in good health and is expected to be reunited with his family soon.

“We are grateful to confirm that our good friend and brother in Christ, Kevin Rideout, has been released after over nine months in captivity,” SIM International Director Phil Bauman said in a statement.

The organisation added that Rideout is currently in good health and receiving care from U.S. officials.

Rideout was abducted on October 21, 2025, outside his home in Niger’s capital, Niamey. Three unidentified men reportedly carried out the abduction before fleeing towards the western Tillaberi region, an area affected by Islamist militant activity.

Following the kidnapping, the U.S. Embassy in Niger increased its security measures and warned American citizens about the heightened risk of kidnapping across the country.

Reports indicate that Rideout is currently in FBI custody, although authorities have not disclosed detailed information about how he was released, the exact circumstances surrounding his freedom, or the identities of his abductors.

Niger continues to face serious security challenges, with militant groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State operating in several areas, particularly along the country’s borders.

Rideout’s release brings an end to more than nine months of captivity as efforts continue to address the growing security crisis in the region.
