Far-right British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after allegedly overstaying his legal permission to remain in the country.
The US Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos was taken into custody at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday.
According to the department, Yiannopoulos entered the US through New York City on May 14, 2019, but allegedly remained in the country beyond the period authorised for his stay.
An Immigration Judge reportedly issued a final removal order against him on July 22, after he failed to appear for an immigration hearing. US authorities said he would remain in ICE custody pending his removal from the country.
The Department of Homeland Security also published a photograph on social media that appeared to show Yiannopoulos in custody. The department warned that people who overstay their authorised visits could be arrested and deported.
Reports said Yiannopoulos was in New Orleans to attend a concert by musician Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. His detention was first reported by TMZ.
Trump ally Laura Loomer appeared to claim responsibility for reporting Yiannopoulos to immigration authorities. She said she had previously accused him of being in the US illegally and alleged that he had made threats against her.
Yiannopoulos, 41, is known for controversial political commentary, online trolling and inflammatory statements. He was permanently banned from Twitter in 2016 but returned to the platform after Elon Musk acquired the company and reinstated his account.
More recently, Yiannopoulos founded Tarantula, a Los Angeles-based talent management company whose listed past and present clients include controversial public figures such as former President Donald Trump, Ye and Martin Shkreli.
