US Condemns Recent Attacks in Libya’s Zawiya and Benghazi

The United States has condemned a series of recent attacks in the Libyan cities of Zawiya and Benghazi, expressing concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians and critical infrastructure.

Massad Boulos, the US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, condemned the attack on the Zawiya Oil Refinery and the killing of Fawzi al-Mansouri, Director of Military Intelligence of the Libyan National Army, in Benghazi.

Boulos called for thorough investigations into the incidents and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

He said the attacks highlight the urgent need for unified and professional military and security institutions capable of protecting the Libyan people.

The US official also called on Libya’s political and military stakeholders to intensify efforts to overcome divisions and work toward unifying the country’s military, economic and political institutions.

Meanwhile, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned the violence and called for an immediate end to armed clashes in Zawiya and Sorman, warning of their potential consequences for civilians and vital infrastructure.

A drone attack on Wednesday reportedly targeted a power station in Zawiya, causing a major fire. Libya’s General Electricity Company said the South Zawiya transformation station was completely burned and taken out of service, disrupting electricity supplies across large areas.

The latest incident came after repeated strikes on the Zawiya Oil Refinery, which Libya’s National Oil Corporation said had been targeted for the fifth time since Sunday. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Libya continues to face political and military divisions, with the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and a rival administration based in Benghazi, headed by Osama Hammad.
