Ukraine Drone Strikes Kill 12, Injure 39 in Russia’s Nizhnekamsk

At least 12 people have been killed and 39 others injured after Ukrainian drones struck industrial and civilian targets in Nizhnekamsk, a city in Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to the city’s mayor, Radmir Belyayev.

The attack reportedly targeted the area around the TANECO oil refinery, one of Russia’s major and technologically advanced refineries. Russian media reported that the facility was hit during the strikes.

Unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show thick smoke rising from the direction of the refinery, although the footage could not be independently verified.

The TANECO refinery, operated by Tatneft, was also targeted by Ukraine in early June. In 2024, the facility processed about 17 million tonnes of crude oil, producing approximately 2.7 million tonnes of gasoline and 8.5 million tonnes of diesel.

Following the attack, Tatarstan’s head, Rustam Minnikhanov, declared a period of mourning, the mayor said.

Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent months, as part of a campaign aimed at disrupting Russia’s energy infrastructure. The strikes have contributed to fuel shortages in parts of the country, although Russian authorities say many of the initial supply problems have since been resolved.
