Farmers across the United Kingdom are raising alarm over worsening food security after one of the driest summers on record severely reduced crop yields.
John Pawsey, an organic farmer in Suffolk, said prolonged dry weather has cut harvests of crops such as wheat, oats and vetch by between 25 and 30 percent. He described the drought as one of the toughest challenges farmers have faced in recent years.
Experts warn that climate change is making farming increasingly difficult, with rising temperatures and prolonged dry spells threatening food production. Many farmers are now experimenting with drought-resistant crops such as chickpeas, fava beans and soybeans to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Food security specialist Timothy Benton said the UK must invest more in sustainable farming systems and agricultural innovation to reduce reliance on imported food and improve resilience against climate change.
The National Farmers' Union also warned that continued drought could lead to shortages of some food products and higher prices if conditions do not improve.
The UK government has pledged increased investment in water infrastructure, including the construction of new reservoirs, to help farmers cope with future droughts.
Farmers, however, say more support is needed to help the agricultural sector adapt, warning that many businesses could struggle to survive if extreme weather becomes the norm.
