President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court and vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
The President said the decision was taken to safeguard public confidence in Nigeria's democratic process, noting that Osun State is only days away from its governorship election.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday, Tinubu clarified that he was not opposed to the EFCC carrying out its legal responsibilities. However, he expressed concern over the timing of the commission's action.
According to the President, although the EFCC acted under a valid court order obtained on August 5, 2026, the move could create the impression that federal institutions were interfering in the forthcoming election.
Tinubu stressed that since assuming office, he has consistently allowed anti-corruption agencies and other law enforcement bodies to operate independently, professionally, and without political interference.
He explained that while he had not been fully briefed on the reasons behind the EFCC's investigation, the proximity of the governorship election made it necessary for him to intervene in the public interest.
The President stated that no action should undermine the credibility, fairness, or integrity of the electoral process.
Consequently, he directed the EFCC to immediately approach the court, vacate the account-freezing order, and discontinue the action against the Osun State Government.
The EFCC had frozen the state's accounts as part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities. The Osun State Government denied allegations of misappropriating ₦11 billion and accused the anti-graft agency of acting unfairly.
The EFCC has maintained that its investigation is not politically motivated and insisted it acted within the powers granted to it by law.
The President's directive comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the Osun governorship election, with growing public attention on the neutrality of government institutions during the electoral process.
