Thousands of people gathered in the Spanish town of Buñol on Wednesday for the annual La Tomatina festival, one of the country’s most famous and unusual summer celebrations.
The event saw around 20,000 participants take part in a massive tomato battle, with trucks dumping as much as 165 tonnes of overripe tomatoes onto the streets. For about an hour, revellers threw tomatoes at one another as music played throughout the town.
Many participants arrived wearing white clothes, which quickly became covered in red tomato pulp. Authorities protected buildings with tarpaulins and deployed police to manage the large crowds.
La Tomatina attracts visitors from around the world, with international tourists accounting for a significant share of participants. The festival has also become increasingly popular among Indian visitors, partly because of its appearance in the 2011 Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
The tradition dates back to 1945, when a local food fight reportedly sparked the event. Although it was later banned during the rule of Francisco Franco, La Tomatina eventually returned and grew into an internationally recognised festival.
Participants are required to squash tomatoes before throwing them to reduce the risk of injury. Goggles and other protective equipment are also commonly used.
When the tomato battle ends, a cannon blast signals the conclusion of the event. Participants then wash themselves at communal showers while the town’s streets are cleaned with water.
Today, La Tomatina remains one of Spain’s most distinctive annual celebrations, drawing thousands of people to Buñol each August.
