Syria says a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit the country in the coming days to announce what Damascus described as “significant progress” concerning the issue of nuclear materials.
Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission made the announcement on Tuesday but did not provide further details.
Since the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria’s new authorities have pledged to cooperate with the United Nations nuclear watchdog to resolve outstanding questions surrounding nuclear-related activities carried out during decades of Assad family rule.
Syria is not known to possess operational stockpiles of nuclear material for a weapons programme. However, Israel bombed a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor in Deir al-Zor province in 2007.
The IAEA later reported finding traces of uranium at one of three locations allegedly linked to the site. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said in June that the agency intended to conduct further investigations in the area when conditions permitted, with the aim of establishing a clearer picture of Syria’s past nuclear activities.
Reuters reported that discussions between Syria and the IAEA over nuclear materials are still ongoing, with no final agreement reached.
A Syrian official familiar with the matter said consultations were also underway to establish an international support group that would coordinate the necessary technical and legal assistance.
The official stressed that Syria was working directly with the IAEA to meet its obligations and said Israel had no role in the process.
