Sultanate Urges Muslims to Look Out for Rabi’ul Awwal Moon on Thursday

The Sokoto Sultanate Council has called on Muslims across the country to look out for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The call was contained in a statement dated August 12 and signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

According to the council, Thursday, August 13, corresponds to 29 Safar 1448 AH and has therefore been designated as the day for Muslims to search for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal.

The council urged anyone who sights the moon to report it to the nearest District or Village Head, who will communicate the sighting to His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

Rabi’ul Awwal is an important month in the Islamic calendar. The 12th of Rabi’ul Awwal is traditionally observed by many Muslims as the birth date of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Muslims in various communities, including followers of different Sufi orders, commonly mark the occasion through Maulud gatherings, religious lectures, Qur’anic recitations, praises and other Islamic activities.

The Sultanate Council prayed for Allah’s guidance and assistance for Muslims carrying out the religious duty of moon sighting and for a successful commencement of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH.
