Soldier, Police Officer Killed as Troops Rescue Nine Kidnap Victims in Zamfara

A Nigerian Army officer and a police officer have been killed during a fierce gun battle with suspected terrorists in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully repelled an attack on their Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kasuwan Daji in the early hours of Saturday, August 2, 2026.

The military said the attackers attempted to infiltrate the base at about 1:40 a.m. under the cover of darkness but were detected by alert troops, who responded with heavy firepower and forced the terrorists to flee.

Following the failed attack, reinforcements launched a pursuit operation, leading to the rescue of nine civilians who had been abducted from nearby communities by the fleeing gunmen.

The Army confirmed that one soldier and one police officer lost their lives during the exchange of fire, while two other soldiers sustained gunshot injuries. The wounded personnel were airlifted to a medical facility for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Military authorities stated that troops have secured the area and are conducting follow-up operations to assess the terrorists' casualties and prevent further attacks.

The Army also dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that six security personnel were killed, insisting that only one Army officer and one police officer died during the operation.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against terrorist groups and restoring lasting peace across Nigeria's North-West region.
