The Sokoto State Government has donated more than N100 million and 408 bags of assorted food items to families affected by bandit attacks and a recent boat accident in Wurno and Goronyo Local Government Areas.
The assistance was announced on Monday during a condolence visit by a high-powered government delegation led by former governor and APC leader, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, who represented Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
In Dinawa, families of seven people killed in a bandit attack received N1 million each, along with two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice. Five injured victims received N250,000 each in addition to food items.
In Birjingo, families of three people killed in another attack also received N1 million each, while six injured victims received N250,000 each and food supplies.
At Gorau, where 65 people reportedly died in a boat accident, each bereaved family received N1 million, two bags each of maize and millet, and one bag of rice.
Wamakko expressed sympathy to the affected families and assured residents that the state government would continue supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity. He noted that the government had recently provided 62 armoured vehicles to security agencies.
He also urged rural communities to cooperate with security personnel and prayed for an end to banditry and other security challenges.
Following the boat accident, Governor Ahmed Aliyu directed authorities to immediately stop the overloading of boats, which was identified as a major factor contributing to accidents. Local government authorities and the district head were instructed to enforce the directive strictly.
The delegation also visited Tsamaye in Sabon Birni LGA to condole with residents over the death of the local APC chairman, Alhaji Amadu Malale.
State officials, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, commended the government for providing relief to the affected families.
