Senator Saliu Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central in the National Assembly, has secured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial ticket to contest the 2027 election, following his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mustapha formally collected the PDP nomination form on Friday, August 21, 2026. The form was presented to him by the Kwara State PDP Chairman, Isa Adamu Baw.
His move came just hours after he announced his resignation from the APC following months of disagreement with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Party officials said Mustapha was given the ticket after discussions with former lawmaker Moshood Mustapha, who had previously been considered for the PDP's Kwara Central senatorial ticket.
The defection is expected to set up a major political contest in Kwara Central, as Mustapha will likely face Governor AbdulRazaq, who has secured the APC ticket to contest the same senatorial seat.
Mustapha's resignation followed prolonged disagreements within the APC, particularly after the party's governorship primary in which Speaker Yakubu Danladi Salihu emerged as the party's candidate.
The senator was among influential aspirants and stakeholders who rejected parts of the process and became associated with the aggrieved G15 group.
In his resignation statement, Mustapha said he made the decision after consultations with political stakeholders, supporters and constituents. He said politics should remain focused on “people, principles and purpose.”
He thanked APC leaders, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained while in the party. He also assured his constituents that although his political platform had changed, his principles and commitment to them remained the same.
His defection to the PDP confirms weeks of speculation that the opposition party was preparing to accommodate him in Kwara Central.
The development is expected to transform the APC's internal crisis in Kwara into a major 2027 electoral battle and could lead to further defections and political realignments within the aggrieved APC bloc. [Read the original Daily Trust.
