Russian missile and drone strikes near Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, have killed three people, including a child, and injured at least three others, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday.
The attacks struck three locations in the Boryspil district, just outside Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional administration. Explosions were also reported across the capital, with fires breaking out in several areas.
Emergency crews were deployed to damaged sites as firefighters worked to contain fires caused by the overnight strikes.
The latest bombardment comes as Ukraine faces growing pressure on its air-defence capabilities. Ukrainian officials say the country does not have enough missile interceptors and Patriot air-defence systems to adequately protect its major cities from Russian ballistic missile attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that Ukraine received only about one-third as many air-defence missiles during the first half of 2026 as it received during the same period in 2025.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued carrying out long-range attacks inside Russian territory. Ukrainian forces recently targeted oil refineries and a logistics facility linked to Russian e-commerce company Wildberries.
The escalation comes as the United States Senate has approved a major sanctions bill targeting Russia’s energy sector. The legislation, which passed by an 86–11 vote, proposes 100 percent tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas.
The sanctions bill must still be approved by the US House of Representatives and signed by President Donald Trump before it can become law.
