Ratko Mladic, Convicted Bosnian Serb War Criminal, Dies

Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has died at the age of 83 or 84.

Mladic, who was serving a life sentence, reportedly died at a United Nations prison hospital in The Hague, Netherlands. His death was reported by Serbian and Bosnian Serb state broadcasters and confirmed by a UN official.

Mladic was convicted in 2017 over his role in atrocities committed during the 1992–1995 Bosnian War. He was found guilty of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed.

Often referred to as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” Mladic spent his final years in prison after the international tribunal found him responsible for some of the most serious crimes committed during the conflict.

His death marks the end of the life of one of the most notorious figures prosecuted for atrocities in Europe since World War II.
