Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei in late July, according to Iranian state media, amid growing questions over the supreme leader’s health and limited public appearances.
The meeting reportedly took place around the beginning of Pezeshkian’s third year in office and focused on key issues including military affairs, the economy, foreign exchange management, energy consumption and strengthening economic relations with foreign partners.
Pezeshkian has provided differing accounts in recent weeks about his communication with Khamenei. On July 21, he said interactions with the supreme leader were increasing, but earlier this month described communication with him as “very difficult.”
Mojtaba Khamenei has rarely appeared in public since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s supreme leader in March. His father was killed in a February 28 Israeli and U.S. airstrike.
Iranian officials have previously reported that Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously injured in the attack.
Meanwhile, Qasem Qoraishi, deputy head of Iran’s Basij Organisation, said authorities would eventually release video footage and other documentation showing Khamenei in public, on the streets and meeting commanders of Iran’s armed forces.
The announcement appears intended to counter speculation surrounding the supreme leader’s health and his absence from public view.
