Norway’s King Harald V has been admitted to hospital following a medical examination, with Crown Prince Haakon assuming the role of Regent for two weeks.
The 89-year-old monarch was admitted to the National Hospital on Monday, according to a statement from the Royal House.
The Royal House said King Harald had recently been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that had resulted in fluid accumulation in his body and required hospital treatment.
“The King is on sick leave for two weeks,” the statement said, adding that Crown Prince Haakon would serve as Regent during the period.
The Royal House said further information would be provided on how the King’s hospitalisation would affect the royal household’s official programme.
This is the second time King Harald has been hospitalised this month. He had visited the hospital about 10 days earlier for what the Royal House described as a planned medical check-up and follow-up appointment.
King Harald V, who has reigned since 1991, has experienced several health-related hospital visits in recent years.
