The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned residents in 13 states of possible flash floods between August 11 and 20, 2026.
The states identified as being at high risk are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet said its warning was based on forecasts of rainfall intensity, soil moisture, drainage capacity, terrain and dam characteristics. The advisory is aimed at helping communities and emergency agencies prepare early and reduce the risks associated with flooding.
The agency warned that flash floods could affect flood-prone, low-lying, urban and riverside communities, potentially causing road closures, traffic congestion and disruptions to transportation.
Heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility and affect road and aviation operations, while flooding may temporarily disrupt electricity and telecommunications services.
NiMet further warned that waterlogging could damage farmlands, crops and livestock, while flash floods could destroy roads, bridges, drainage systems and other critical infrastructure. Stagnant floodwater could also increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
The agency urged residents to monitor official weather forecasts and flood alerts and to avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges and fast-moving water.
People living in vulnerable areas were advised to remain alert and be prepared to relocate to safer locations if necessary.
NiMet also called on emergency management authorities to strengthen surveillance, pre-position response teams and maintain emergency preparedness.
Farmers were advised to improve drainage on their farms and move livestock, farm machinery and harvested produce away from flood-prone areas.
