Nigeria Resumes Onion Exports to Ghana After Trade Dispute

Nigerian onion traders have resumed exports to Ghana after the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) lifted its suspension on cross-border shipments.

The suspension was lifted with immediate effect following renewed consultations involving trade authorities from Nigeria and Ghana, diplomatic officials, ECOWAS and other relevant stakeholders.

NOPPMAN had suspended exports over difficulties faced by Nigerian and Nigerien traders at Ghana’s Kotoku Market, particularly issues surrounding the reception, allocation and offloading of onion consignments, as well as concerns about the safety and free movement of traders.

The association’s President, Aliyu Maitasamu, said the decision followed steps toward establishing a more sustainable framework for cross-border onion trade.

He urged exporters and transporters to operate peacefully and comply with relevant laws, customs procedures, phytosanitary requirements, ECOWAS and AfCFTA trade regulations.

NOPPMAN also called on Ghanaian stakeholders to ensure the safe reception, lawful movement, fair market access and uninterrupted offloading of legitimate Nigerian and Nigerien onion consignments.

The association said any disputes should be resolved through dialogue and established mechanisms rather than intimidation, obstruction or violence.

NOPPMAN expressed hope that the latest development would lead to a permanent and mutually acceptable framework that protects producers, exporters, transporters, marketers and consumers across both countries.
