Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, Shin Bet, says Yair Netanyahu, the eldest son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was urgently evacuated from the United States and returned to Israel following a significant threat to his life.
Yair Netanyahu, a right-wing activist and podcaster, had been living in Florida for several years and was accompanied by an Israeli security team.
Shin Bet said the decision to evacuate him was made after an assessment of the threat, although the agency did not reveal who was behind it.
US broadcaster Newsmax previously reported that Yair Netanyahu had allegedly been the target of an Iranian assassination plot in December while he was living in Florida. Israeli intelligence reportedly informed US authorities about the alleged plot.
The development comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently claimed that Iran had attempted to kill one of his sons, although he did not identify the son at the time.
Yair Netanyahu’s long-term residence in the US has attracted criticism in Israel, particularly following the October 7, 2023 attacks, as many Israeli reservists were mobilised for military service while he remained abroad.
The 34-year-old is also known for his outspoken political views on social media, where he frequently criticises his father’s political opponents, journalists and government critics.
