Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved ₦300 million in financial and material support for beneficiaries of the state government’s Hisbah Mass Wedding Scheme.
Under the initiative, each bride will receive ₦200,000 to assist with the payment of dowry and provide start-up capital. Newly married couples will also receive household items to help them establish their homes.
The Commander of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed the details on Thursday during a pre-marital orientation programme for prospective couples at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House.
Daurawa said the financial assistance would be transferred directly into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts after they open individual accounts.
He added that the state government would provide complete household furniture for the couples. Each groom will also receive 10 yards of fabric, a cap, shoes and food items as part of the governor’s support package.
According to the Hisbah commander, the intervention is aimed at reducing the financial burden associated with marriage and giving the couples a stronger foundation for family life.
Daurawa further announced that the state government would host a grand wedding reception for the couples at the Government House on Saturday. Prominent Islamic scholars from across Nigeria are expected to attend the event and offer prayers for the newlyweds.
He urged the prospective husbands to treat their wives with love, fairness and responsibility, while advising the brides to be patient and supportive as they build their families.
The Hisbah commander also encouraged couples to resolve marital disagreements through dialogue and reconciliation, stressing that the Hisbah Board does not encourage divorce without first attempting mediation.
He appealed to beneficiaries of previous editions of the mass wedding programme to attend Saturday’s reception, saying their presence would encourage the new couples and strengthen the objectives of the initiative.
