Iran has reportedly been invited to join the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, according to Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament’s official news agency, Khaneh Mellat.
Rahimi told Al-Mayadeen that Tehran had received the invitation and was currently considering it.
However, the claim has not been independently confirmed by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, senior Iranian officials, or the governments of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was recently signed by the three countries as a mutual defence arrangement. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the agreement as an important message to the international community, while US President Donald Trump praised it as a major step toward greater regional security.
If Iran were to join the agreement, it would represent a significant shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics, particularly given the longstanding rivalry between Tehran and Riyadh and the recent escalation surrounding the US-Iran conflict.
The reported invitation also comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and several Gulf states. An Iranian lawmaker recently threatened Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates over their hosting of US military aircraft, while Iranian officials have warned countries supporting US economic and military pressure against Tehran.
For now, Iran’s reported invitation remains unconfirmed, and it is unclear whether Tehran will accept or formally respond to the proposal.
