Iran has disputed accounts from Qatar and Kuwait regarding the fate of several Iranian personnel reportedly detained or missing in the two Gulf countries.
An Iranian military official said on Sunday that Qatar should allow an Iranian investigation team to enter the country to determine what happened to Iranian pilots whom Tehran says were captured by Qatari forces.
Qatar has denied holding any Iranian pilots. Doha said its search-and-rescue teams recovered the remains of one pilot after Iranian aircraft allegedly violated Qatari airspace in March and failed to respond to repeated attempts to contact them.
Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of Iran’s Committee for the Search for Missing Persons under the Armed Forces General Staff, said an Iranian Air Force expert and a fact-finding team had been waiting for months to enter Qatar, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Baqerzadeh accused Qatari authorities of repeatedly delaying the investigation and preventing the return of the pilots’ remains to Iran. He also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to urgently intervene in the case.
Iran also accused Kuwait of withholding information about four Iranian nationals detained there.
Tehran said in May that the four men were affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and had been on a maritime patrol before entering Kuwaiti territorial waters because of a navigation problem. Kuwait, however, said the men were suspected of planning hostile activities against the country.
The competing claims come amid heightened regional tensions and growing diplomatic disputes involving Iran and its Gulf neighbours.
