Iran has announced that two employees of the French Embassy who were involved in a diplomatic dispute last month will not be allowed to return to the country.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the two employees had violated the Vienna Convention by engaging in activities aimed at supporting Iranian civil society.
Baghaei said that claims that the employees were involved in supporting civil society amounted to an admission that they had breached diplomatic rules. He did not provide further details.
The dispute comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western countries following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot previously said the two employees were tasked with developing programmes supporting Iranian civil society, students and artists. He defended France’s involvement, saying the country had long supported Iranian civil society.
France summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires on July 21 after accusing Iranian security forces of detaining and physically intimidating French embassy staff in Tehran.
