The Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery targeting three banks in Labone, Accra, killing two suspected robbers and arresting another.
The arrested suspect was identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi.
According to the police, officers received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on August 13, 2026, that a robbery gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in the Labone area.
A police team was immediately deployed to the area, where suspected gang members were spotted in vehicles parked near the banks.
When the suspects noticed the police, one vehicle reportedly sped away. Officers pursued it and arrested Maazi, while another occupant escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at the police. The officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspected robbers.
Police recovered two vehicles — a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson — as well as a pistol believed to have been used during the confrontation.
Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the officers involved for preventing the planned robbery and urged the public to continue providing credible information about criminal activities.
