The Federal Government has announced plans to complete the reconstruction of Lagos’ Carter Bridge within 24 months, ahead of the original 36-month timeline.
Works Minister Dave Umahi said the 1.58km bridge, which has been in use for more than 60 years, suffered serious structural deterioration due to inadequate maintenance, rust, erosion and illegal sand mining.
The redesigned bridge will feature additional ramps, improved traffic flow and a cable-stayed section to provide sufficient clearance for navigation. Contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has completed about 15% of preparatory work, while piling is expected to begin soon.
The government said the existing bridge will remain operational during construction to prevent severe traffic disruption in Lagos. Additional protective measures, including gabions, will also be installed.
Meanwhile, work on the Iddo Bridge is progressing, with three damaged spans already replaced. Officials expect that project to be completed within two months.
Umahi also said similar measures are being applied to the Third Mainland Bridge, with the aim of extending its lifespan by another 50 years.
